Qualifications:
  • Contract perfusionists shall be board certified as a perfusionist as recognized by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion.
  • ACLS/BLS
  • Contract perfusionists shall be board certified as a perfusionist as recognized by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion.
  • The contract perfusionists should have done no less than 150 cases in any one year period.  Their case mix should have included complex aortic arch and thoraco-abdominal surgeries.

Work Schedule:
  • Monday 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. – Two Perfusionist for scheduled procedures
  •  Wednesday 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. – One Perfusionist for on-site equipment maintenance.   The cleaning of the equipment is for eight hours every Wednesday.  The 8-hour shift time is negotiable.
  •  Thursday 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. – Two Perfusionist for scheduled procedures
  •  On-call Services 24/7 on Tuesday and Friday through Sunday.
Duties:
  • Services include selection of VA provided equipment and supplies for extracorporeal circulation (in consultation with the Chief of Surgical Service), set-up and provide 24 hour trouble shooting for intra-aortic balloon pumps, set-up and operate the heart-lung machine, set-up and run the cell saver and such other extracorporeal circulatory services requested by the operating surgeon, and cleaning the equipment at the end of each case.  The assigned Contract Perfusionist shall stock all needed VA furnished supply items so as to guarantee their availability on a 24-hour basis for all elective and emergency cases.
  • Coverage of regularly scheduled percutaneous transarterial catheter angioplasty (PTCA) cases is usually done at the end of the working day without change unless a separate Contract Perfusionist must return to the hospital.
  •  It is the Perfusionists responsibility to view the patient record within CPRS prior to the surgery to review the surgeon’s plan of care.
  • Contract Perfusionists are responsible for functioning as an integral part of the patient care management team to include participation in quality assurance activities.  Contract Perfusionists shall provide in-service training and assistance to VA staff as appropriate.  Contract Perfusionists calibrate and maintain VA provided Perfusion equipment in accordance with manufacturer's guidelines and regulatory requirements.
ADMINISTRATIVE: 5% of time not involved in direct patient care
  • Contract Perfusionists will generate extracorporeal technology related records and documentation.
