Nurse Practitioner


I. Position Summary:

The Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) is responsible for coordinating the care of and the transportation of infants from referring facilities. Must be educated in in-flight and ambulance treatment modalities, altitude physiology, general aircraft and ambulance safety, and emergency procedures. Utilizes advanced nursing process for assessment, diagnosis, planning and implementation and evaluation of patient care. Documents patient response to interventions and outcomes. Collaborates with referral team, Airlife and the physicians in the planning and delivery of care. Uses advanced knowledge of pathophysiology and technical skills to provide management of the neonate in referral centers and on transport, including lab/xray interpretation, intubation, line placement, thoracentesis, throacotomy, and intraosseous access. Delegates appropriately to respiratory therapists, nurses and other team members. Demonstrates advanced leadership abilities through nursing judgment, decision making and problem solving skills. Acts as an advocate for clients/family members and referral team. Maintains a professional demeanor through conduct, appearance and communication. Demonstrates knowledge of health care economics through cost effective utilization of resources.


Qualifications
I. Position Requirements
A. Licensure/Certification/Registration:
Current licensure in the State of Colorado as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse; BLS and NRP certifications. PALS within 6 months of hire. Must maintain all certifications throughout employment.
Education:
Three years acute care / neonatal specialty nursing minimum. Prefer previous critical care transport experience. Able to articulate and demonstrate knowledge of nursing theory and practice. Able to articulate and demonstrate knowledge of critical care transport.
B. Experience:
Three years acute care / neonatal specialty nursing minimum. Prefer previous neonatal critical care transport experience. Able to articulate and demonstrate knowledge of nursing theory and practice. Able to articulate and demonstrate knowledge of critical care transport.
C. Other Job Requirements:
Must be able to work in highly dynamic environment with exposure to noise, vibration and weather extremes. Must be able to wear Night Vision Goggles (NVGs) and helmets for extended periods of time in flight. The weight of each helmet is approximately 3.64 pounds with the additional weight of the NVGs of 1.84 pounds.
D. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Demonstrates good organizational skills. Provides safe and appropriate patient care within the Practice Privileges for HCA
and AirLife. Displays appropriate judgment and problem solving skills. Communicates positively and professionally with all internal and external customers.
II. Degree of Supervision Required:
Able to work independently and autonomously and complies with standards of practice, standards of care and regulatory requirements. Submit to periodic Medical Control Review of care.
III. Orientation Period:
Based on experience and continuous assessment of progress of Director, Assistant Director/Chief Flight Nurse, Educator and Medical Director. Orientation ranges between 12-16 weeks. Orientation includes formal nursing department orientation of 2-4 days during first 2 weeks of employment.
